The Food and Drug administration ruled on Tuesday that PHO’s (partially hydrogenated oils), the source of trans fats, were no longer “generally recognized as safe. The FDA has defined safe as “a reasonable certainty in the minds of competent scientists that the substance is not harmful under the intended conditions of use”
The two most common PHO’s used in the food industry are partially hydrogenated soybean oil and cottonseed oil.
The F.D.A. has given the food industry three years to eliminate all artificial trans fats from the food supply, a change that the agency has estimated could prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths from heart disease each year.
