Merging Magical & Immersive Experiences: Disney+ on Apple Vision Pro

Updated: Jun 26, 2023

Apple's 2023 WWDC event was filled with exciting announcements, but one product stole the show—the Apple Vision Pro headset. This groundbreaking device has sparked discussions among networks, influencers, and tech enthusiasts, with some questioning its purpose and target audience, while others believe it has the potential to reshape how we interact with the digital world. While the true impact of the Vision Pro is yet to be fully realized, one aspect of its announcement has been largely overlooked—the collaboration with Disney and the availability of Disney+ on the VisionOS platform at launch.

During the event, the presence of Bob Iger, Disney's prominent figure, alongside Apple, piqued my interest. The unveiling of Disney+ on the Vision Pro showcased the potential for an extraordinary viewing experience. Initially, it seemed puzzling given Apple's own streaming service, Apple TV+. However, after reflecting on this for a while, it became evident to me that this collaboration had been years in the making and might even be one of the reasons behind Bob Iger's return to lead Disney.

Disney, renowned for its beloved IP such as Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar, has always been committed to delivering magical and immersive experiences. Yet, the challenges faced by Disney parks, including massive crowds, long wait times, and operational constraints, often hinder these experiences. External factors like labour shortages, global politics or COVID-19 restrictions also impact Disney's park operations. The Apple Vision Pro, equipped with spatial audio and a 4K screen for each eye, offers the potential to simulate these immersive experiences at home. Imagine inviting Mickey Mouse into your kitchen, transforming character meet-and-greets into unprecedented encounters, without the need to wait in long queues or travel to the parks.

Disney has long embraced augmented reality (AR) technology, using it to create captivating experiences at their parks. Additionally, their films have transitioned to visually stunning 3D experiences especially tailored for IMAX. I believe that Disney, committed to delivering immersive experiences through the Disney+ app, will now leverage the Apple Vision Pro to bring the IMAX theater experience to your couch. Watching a 3D movie, such as the latest Avatar, will transport you to an IMAX theater, all within the comfort of your own home.

The integration of Disney+ into VisionOS holds huge implications for the Vision Pro headset itself. The device's groundbreaking hardware specifications and its ability to seamlessly immerse users in virtual environments or augment their reality represent a significant leap for various real-world applications. By examining Apple's progression across its operating systems, such as iOS, macOS, watchOS, and iPadOS, it seems evident that these developments have been leading up to the new user interface and user experience provided by visionOS. The interface's familiarity will facilitate mainstream adoption of mixed reality experiences with the Vision Pro, while the use of eye and hand movements as input methods will make it accessible for creative and business applications.

Apple has described the Vision Pro as the new frontier in "the era of Spatial Computing." With the release of the visionOS software development kit (SDK), developers worldwide will begin creating innovative apps specifically designed for the Apple Vision Pro. As Apple continues to expand its "Vision" lineup, we can anticipate that future versions of the Vision Pro will offer spatial experiences on more affordable and simpler devices. While it is still early, initial impressions suggest that the Vision Pro's capabilities have the potential to genuinely transform existing home entertainment experiences.

The Apple Vision Pro headset, unveiled at the 2023 WWDC event, represents a remarkable leap in consumer technology. Through its collaboration with Disney and the integration of Disney+ on the VisionOS platform, the device opens up a world of immersive home entertainment experiences. From interactive character encounters to the thrill of an IMAX theater in your living room, the Vision Pro has the power to redefine how we engage with media. As Apple continues to push boundaries and enhance the Vision lineup, we eagerly await the launch of this revolutionary device, anticipating the transformation of mainstream home entertainment experiences.
