Why Apple Needs to Bring Back the Magic

The lineup of 'Magic' accessories by Apple include products like the Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad. These devices are known for their sleek design, seamless integration with Apple products, and innovative features. For years, Apple fans have expressed a variety of desires for improvements in the next iterations of the these peripherals and I think that it is about time for Apple to announce some new updates.

The Magic Mouse is a multi-touch mouse allowing gesture controls, the Magic Keyboard is known for its comfortable and responsive keys, and the Magic Trackpad offers a large touch surface with gesture support.

Unlike their more prominent product lines like iPhones or MacBooks, which typically see annual updates, the Magic accessories often go several years between updates. The original Magic Mouse was introduced in 2009, followed by the Magic Mouse 2 in 2015. The second version brought in rechargeable batteries and design changes. The first Magic Keyboard was released in 2015, replacing the earlier Apple Wireless Keyboard. Since then, there have been variants like the Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad and versions for the iPad. The Magic Trackpad debuted in 2010, with the Magic Trackpad 2 following in 2015, featuring Force Touch capabilities. Historically, updates to these accessories have been less frequent and often coincide with major updates to Apple's desktop computers, like the iMac. In 2020, the Magic Keyboard with TouchID and Numeric Keypad, the Magic Trackpad with a larger multi-touch surface, and the Magic Mouse with a new design were re-introduced with the 24-inch iMac, offering different colors to match the iMac. As well as standalone black and silver versions of the mouse keyboard and trackpad launching in 2022 with the Mac Studio and Studio Display.

According to various sources (AppleInsider, MacRumors,) there is much speculation that Apple might release refreshed versions of the Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad with USB-C ports in the spring of 2024. This update would mark a significant shift from the current Lightning ports used in these devices. The transition to USB-C for these accessories aligns with Apple's broader strategy of incorporating USB-C across its product range, as seen in their latest-generation iPad models, AirPods Pro, Siri remote, and iPhone 15 lineup.

The Magic accessories have always maintained a consistent aesthetic, and since their last major update in 2015, have only had minor revisions like the introduction of braided cables and exclusive color options. Regarding the Magic Mouse specifically, one of the notable points of criticism has been the placement of the charging port on the underside of the mouse, which makes it unusable while charging. It remains to be seen if the upcoming refresh will address this design aspect and offer a more user-friendly charging experience but we know that Apple has received plenty of user feedback on this issue.

Integrating pass-through charging would allow users to charge the device while it's in use, addressing this major criticism of the current Magic Mouse design. Advances in Apple Silicon chips and battery technologies could be leveraged to extend the battery life of these accessories significantly. This might include more energy-efficient components or the use of higher-capacity batteries without increasing the size or weight of the devices. Apple could potentially integrate Qi 2 wireless charging capabilities into these accessories. This would allow for more efficient and faster wireless charging, and it could potentially make the devices compatible with a wider range of charging mats, including those built into desks or other furniture. Upgrading to Bluetooth 5.3 would also offer improved connectivity with reduced latency, increased range, and better energy efficiency. This could enhance the user experience, especially in environments with many competing wireless signals. Another commonly mentioned update is the addition of backlighting to the Magic Keyboard. This feature would greatly enhance usability in low-light conditions and is a standard feature in many contemporary keyboards.

Apple's product release schedule can vary depending on various factors, such as market demand, supply chain issues and development challenges. Though, it is possible that they may surprise us with new products shortly after the Consumer Electronic Showcase.

CES 2024 showcased a range of innovative gadgets and accessories, some of which could influence future Apple products or be compatible with them. Although Apple itself does not typically make announcements at CES, the innovations showcased by other companies often reflect or influence trends in technology that Apple may incorporate or adapt to in its future products and accessories. Especially with the release of Apple's Vision Pro headset in February this year, which is a significant step into the mixed reality and spatial computing domain for Apple. It's quite plausible that Apple might introduce new accessories or complementary products tailored to enhance the experience with this new form factor. I don't know what the future holds for Apple, but I'm excited to see what products they release this year!
